FAQs
Should we rent a car while visiting St. Thomas?
We always recommend renting a car when visiting St. Thomas. Relying on taxis can get expensive, and waiting for them can be time-consuming. A rental car provides the freedom to explore remote parts of St. Thomas, shop for groceries at your convenience, stay out late, and avoid being stranded without cell service. The only time relying solely on taxis makes sense is if you’re staying on the east end or at a resort and don’t plan on venturing off the beaten path.
Is there Uber, Lyft, etc.
on St. Thomas?
No, St. Thomas doesn’t currently offer Uber, Lyft, or similar services. The only transportation options in St. Thomas are rental cars, taxis, walking, or the ever-dependable hoofing it (just for the record, we do NOT recommend the last option!). Due to the lack of sidewalks and the mountainous terrain, we do not recommend walking as a primary mode
of transportation.
What can I expect to pay
for a taxi?
Taxi rates in St. Thomas are set by the taxi commission, and certified taxi drivers follow this fare guide. Be cautious of uncertified drivers who might set their own rates, especially late at night.
You can find the official taxi rates by clicking HERE.
Is my rental property in a safe area?
At BlueSalt Properties, we do not offer rental properties in unsafe areas of St. Thomas. However, we always recommend being cautious: lock your rental property before you leave, secure your vehicle, avoid displaying large amounts of cash in public, and be mindful of your surroundings. St. Thomas, like any other place, has its share of opportunists, so stay vigilant and smart during your stay.
Are there any beaches within walking distance to my vacation rental?
The proximity of beaches to your vacation rental depends on its location. Generally, St. Thomas is not a walkable island from a safety or practical standpoint. Some vacation rentals at resorts are on the beach and within walking distance. If a villa rental is beachfront, we’ll always mention this in the listing! But typically, a short drive is required to reach the nearest beach.
What's the WiFi like on St. Thomas?
All vacation rentals include WiFi, but, like our power, WiFi can sometimes be slow or experience outages. While this is rare, we recommend taking these opportunities to visit the beach or enjoy a cold beverage on the patio. If you require reliable WiFi for remote work, consider bringing a portable WiFi device compatible with St. Thomas to ensure uninterrupted internet access.
Can we drink the water at our rental property?
St. Thomas drinking water is a divisive topic for some. The water at most vacation properties is triple filtered and passes through a UV light, but it is not chlorine treated. It’s suitable for making coffee, cooking, and brushing your teeth. However, for drinking, we recommend buying gallon jugs from the store.
Is it true that you drive on the left on St. Thomas?
Yes! We drive on the left side of the road in St. Thomas, even though our vehicles are set up for right-side driving. It may seem unusual, but it’s part of the unique charm of St. Thomas.
Do I need a passport to visit St. Thomas?
St. Thomas is a US Territory, so a passport is not required for US citizens, but it can make your departure a lot faster — so we recommend bringing your passport if you have one! If traveling with young children without photo IDs, bringing their birth certificates as proof of relation or custody will be required by customs officers when leaving the territory. A passport is also necessary for visiting the British Virgin Islands (BVI).
What are the busy cruise ship days for St. Thomas?
The answer to this question is that it varies. Thankfully, there’s a website that will tell you how many cruise ships, if any, are scheduled on a day and how many people are expected to be aboard the cruise ships. HERE IS THE LINK!
