Behind the Waves: Meet the Family Behind Sonic Charters, Oasis Cove Marina, and The Last Mile Water Taxi

Meet the family behind Sonic Charters, Last Mile Water Taxi, and Oasis Cove Marina. Discover their story, passion, and what makes their services unforgettable!

When you think of unforgettable days on the water in St. Thomas and the Virgin Islands, Sonic Charters is often the name that comes to mind. But what makes this family-run business truly stand out? It’s not just the luxury boats, personalized service, or unique itineraries—it’s the people behind it all.

Meet Carrie and Morgan Locke, the husband-and-wife duo who’ve made waves in the marine industry. Alongside their three children, Maya, Max, and Miles, they’ve built not just one, but three thriving businesses: Sonic Charters, Oasis Cove Marina, and The Last Mile Water Taxi. Together, they bring a unique blend of professionalism, passion, and a deep-rooted love for the islands to everything they do.

From a Weekend Hobby to a Thriving Business

Carrie and Morgan’s journey to Sonic Charters began in 2007 when Carrie moved to the Virgin Islands from Baltimore, Maryland. She made her way to St. Croix and shortly after settling in there, she met Morgan, who was born and raised on the island. After two years on St. Croix, the couple moved to St. Thomas in 2009. Four years later, what started as a weekend indulgence—a single boat for fun outings—quickly transformed into a thriving business. “We bought the boat knowing it was an investment,” Carrie shares. “We wanted to charter it when we weren’t using it. One thing led to another, and within a year, we had two boats. Now we have seven!”

Their love for the water and the community inspired them to grow beyond Sonic Charters. They now operate The Last Mile Water Taxi, a convenient service for travelers needing quick, reliable transport to surrounding islands. They recently partnered with a very supportive, like-minded couple that has helped them grow even more, leading to the management of their own marina, Oasis Cove, which is currently expanding with exciting new amenities like a fuel dock and an office for Sonic Charters.

At its heart, Sonic Charters is a family business, and that shines through in everything they do. Their boat names are a testament to their connection: Max’d Out, Maya VI (a nod to their daughter’s middle name, Violet, and the Virgin Islands), and The Last Mile Water Taxi are all named after their kids. Even the business itself carries a sentimental touch—Sonic was the name of their beloved dog, whose legacy lives on in the company’s name.

While managing a business with a young family has its challenges, Carrie and Morgan have found balance by building a strong team. “With a young family at home now, we can’t do nearly as much as we used to,” Carrie says. “We’ve had to bring in help and let go of some control, which has been a learning process. But it’s allowed us to spend more quality time together as a family.”

What Sets Sonic Charters Apart?

Ask anyone who’s worked with or booked through Sonic Charters, and you’ll hear the same thing: this isn’t just a boat charter company—it’s an experience. Carrie’s knack for remembering guests and creating personal connections keeps customers coming back year after year. “We pride ourselves on keeping that small, family-business feel,” she says. “We communicate closely with our guests and go the extra mile to meet special requests.”

Their captains are the face of the business, embodying the same hardworking, motivated, and efficient spirit that drives the company. Each captain brings local expertise, ensuring guests not only have a smooth ride but also an insider’s view of the Virgin Islands.

Tailored Experiences for Every Guest

Whether you’re looking for a luxury day trip, a family-friendly outing, or a water taxi to simplify your travel plans, Sonic Charters has something for everyone. Their well-rounded fleet offers options for every price point, group size, and level of luxury. Favorite itineraries often include stops at iconic spots like The Baths, Jost Van Dyke, and hidden gems like Smugglers Cove or Sandy Spit. “It all depends on what the guest wants—snorkeling, beach bars, or a mix of both,” Carrie explains.

Giving Back and Looking Ahead

Sonic Charters stays rooted in the local community, donating charters and gift certificates to support local organizations each year. As they continue to grow, their commitment to both the community and their guests remains steadfast. With exciting developments like the expansion of Oasis Cove Marina, the future looks bright for this family-run enterprise.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For anyone dreaming of starting a local business in the marine industry, Carrie offers this sage advice: “It’s a labor of love and a hustle, day in and day out. You have to spend money to make money—it’s definitely a long game.”
